Dr Guillaume Matras

Director Laser, Photonics and Optoelectronics

Dr. Guillaume Matras is the Director of Laser, Photonics and Optoelectronics division in DERC. Prior to joining TII -DERC he was working with THALES LAS France as laser expert with almost 17 years of experience in ultrafast and high peak power laser systems. He especially acted as Technical Solution Leader for the ELI-NP program (Romania) until its completion in 2019, in order to develop the first worldwide 10-PetaWatt high peak power laser system (1) (hybrid OPCPA/Ti: Sapphire technology).

In 2002, he obtained an engineering degree in Optics/Electronics from the Telecom Saint-Etienne (France) engineering school. The following year he obtained a Master’s degree in Optics/Photonics from the Université Jean Monnet in Saint-Etienne. He continued his studies by obtaining a PhD in Eric Audouard’s group at the Hubert Curien laboratory (Saint-Etienne) in the framework of a close collaboration with Thales Laser (Orsay, Fr). During his PhD he worked on a 10-kHz Ti: Sapphire laser system (2) fully water-cooled delivering an average power of 5 W compressed down to 50 femtosecond pulses. In December 2007, Dr. Matras joined the Laser Department of Thales LAS France where he worked on different laser systems from few 1-10 kHz 1mJ systems to several tens to hundreds TW systems at different repetition rates (from 0.1Hz to 10Hz), installed all over the world (UK, India, China, Japan, etc.). He was appointed as Project and System Engineering Manager of the first 1-PW high-peak power laser system with sub-25fs pulses (3). In parallel he was involved in the development of a 7 microns 100Hz Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplifier (4) in collaboration with Jens Biegert’s group at ICFO in Barcelona (Spain).
